About Cornerstone Church:

A Living Testament to Faith and Community

Brief Backstory:

Cornerstone Church, originally founded in 1952 as First Baptist Church of Oakridge, served for decades as a traditional Baptist congregation in a growing suburban area. Known for its strong biblical teaching and community outreach, the church faced significant challenges in the 2010s with declining attendance and an aging congregation. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2022 exacerbated these issues, bringing the church to the brink of closure.

In a bold move to revitalize the congregation, the leadership decided to transition to a non-denominational approach in late 2022, adopting the name "Cornerstone Church" to signify a new foundation built on Christ while honoring their heritage. In early 2023, they hired Marcus Chen, a former Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur turned pastor, to lead them into a new era. Under Pastor Marcus's leadership, Cornerstone has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending traditional values with innovative approaches to ministry and community engagement.

Present Day Cornerstone:

While honoring its Baptist roots, the church now welcomes people from various denominational backgrounds, fostering an atmosphere of inclusive, Bible-based Christianity. The church has become known for its engaging worship services, cutting-edge online presence, and impactful community programs.

Cornerstone's Role in Grace Unfolded:

Cornerstone Church serves as more than just a backdrop in Grace Unfolded; it's a character in its own right, evolving and growing alongside the human characters. The church's journey from a traditional, struggling congregation to a vibrant, innovative community of faith mirrors the personal growth of the main characters and provides a rich setting for exploring themes of change, resilience, and inclusive faith in the modern world.

Cornerstone as a Crucible of

Faith and Change:

In Grace Unfolded, Cornerstone Church often serves as a crucible where faith meets real-world challenges. Its transition from a traditional Baptist church to a non-denominational community becomes a recurring theme, providing rich material for both humorous misunderstandings and profound moments of growth. The church's journey mirrors the personal struggles and triumphs of the characters, offering a tangible representation of how faith can adapt and thrive in changing times.

Whether it's Pastor Marcus grappling with integrating new technology into worship, Grace Foster introducing unconventional prayer practices in the garden, or Jack Thompson reluctantly finding community in a church basketball league, Cornerstone becomes the stage where diverse perspectives collide and coalesce. The church's story arc subtly underscores the series' central message: that grace unfolds in unexpected ways, often through the messy, beautiful process of a community learning to embrace change while holding fast to their core beliefs.
