Art of Grace #6: The Great Commission – A Call to Discipleship
JESUS24365 Weekly #16
Sunday, January 5, 2025 | Jesus24365 Ministry

Dear Beloved Jesus24365 Ministry Family,
As we step into this new year, I want to share a story close to my heart—a story that reminds me of the life-changing power of discipleship. In July of 2023, Andrew and Lauren invited me to attend St. Marcus Church. At first, I hesitated, unsure if it was the right step for me. But with nothing else planned that evening, I decided to attend the worship service. That simple decision, prompted by their genuine care and encouragement, changed my life forever. At St. Marcus, I encountered the transformative love of Christ, and my faith journey began in earnest.
This memory is why today’s Key Verse, Matthew 28:19, resonates so deeply with me: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
This verse is more than a command; it’s a sacred call to action. Jesus, having triumphed over sin and death, entrusts us with His mission to bring the hope of salvation to the world. It reminds us that discipleship often starts with small acts—an invitation, a conversation, or a moment of encouragement—that God uses to make an eternal impact.
Through today’s reflections, we will explore how the Psalms equip and inspire us to fulfill this mission. Paired with Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories and vivid symbolic imagery, these Scriptures will stir your heart, strengthen your resolve, and fill you with joy for the work ahead. Let’s embark on this journey together, finding courage, purpose, and strength in the Word.
Key Verse of the Week
Matthew 28:19"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Christian Album of the Week
Alan Jackson – Precious Memories
Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories beautifully captures the themes of the Great Commission. Songs like "Blessed Assurance" remind us of the confidence we have in God’s promises, while "I’ll Fly Away" celebrates the eternal hope we share as believers.
Let these hymns be the soundtrack to your reflections this week. As you listen, let the lyrics encourage you to step boldly into God’s calling, knowing His strength and grace go before you.
Image Reflections
The Journey of Nations
What to See: In this striking image, Christ leads a group of disciples up a rugged mountain path, carrying banners of faith and unity. The radiant celestial city in the distance symbolizes the Kingdom of Heaven, a reminder of the ultimate goal of discipleship. The diversity of the disciples and the cultural emblems on the banners reflect the global nature of Jesus’ Great Commission. The jagged rocks, glowing horizon, and determined expressions of the followers evoke both the challenges and the triumphs of this spiritual journey.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "I’ll Fly Away "The lyrics, “Some bright morning, when this life is over, I’ll fly away,” connect beautifully with the image’s theme of striving toward the heavenly city. The song captures the hope and promise of eternal life that compels us to share the Gospel with others.
Reflection: As you take in the image, reflect on how the journey of discipleship is often filled with challenges, but the ultimate reward is eternal life with Christ. Consider the small steps you can take today—whether it's sharing your faith, inviting someone to worship, or being an example of Christ’s love—to contribute to this mission. Let the lyrics of "I’ll Fly Away" inspire you to embrace the joy and hope of spreading the Gospel.
The Baptismal Commission
What to See: In this serene yet powerful image, Jesus stands in a river, radiant with divine light, as individuals from various walks of life step into the water for baptism. The ripples of the river symbolize the far-reaching impact of this sacred act, and the surrounding greenery evokes new life and growth in Christ. This scene captures the sacred act of baptism as an entry point into the Christian faith and as a response to the Great Commission.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "Are You Washed in the Blood?" The lyrics, “Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?” perfectly align with the image of baptism as a symbol of cleansing, renewal, and unity in Christ.
Reflection: Pause to consider the significance of baptism—not just as a ritual but as a commitment to follow Jesus. Reflect on how you can encourage others to take this step of faith, sharing the joy of salvation and renewal. Let the lyrics of "Are You Washed in the Blood?" remind you of the transforming power of God’s grace and inspire you to live out the call to “baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The Ripple of Discipleship
What to See: This dynamic image illustrates a small pebble creating ripples in a still lake, which transform into scenes of discipleship: baptisms, worship, and faith-sharing among people from different nations. The ripple effect symbolizes how small acts of faith and obedience can have a global impact. The water reflects a radiant sky, suggesting that even the smallest action reflects the glory of God.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" The lyrics, “What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer,” speak to the relational nature of discipleship and the importance of connecting with Christ and others.
Reflection: Think about the small acts of faith that have impacted your life—perhaps an invitation to worship, a word of encouragement, or a shared prayer. How can you be the start of a ripple effect in someone else’s life? As you reflect on the image and the lyrics of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," let it inspire you to see every act of discipleship as part of God’s greater plan to make His name known among all nations.
Iconic Christian Art Reflections
1. "The Baptism of Christ" by Andrea del Verrocchio and Leonardo da Vinci
What to See: In this Renaissance masterpiece, John the Baptist pours water over Jesus’ head, while angels stand nearby in reverent awe. The Holy Spirit, depicted as a dove, descends from the heavens, symbolizing God’s approval and blessing. The soft light and intricate details in the painting highlight the sacredness of baptism and its role in the Great Commission.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" The lyrics, “Come home, come home; ye who are weary, come home,” resonate with the painting’s message of invitation and renewal through baptism.
Reflection: As you contemplate this painting, think about how baptism is a public declaration of faith and an invitation to enter into God’s family. Reflect on the role you play in inviting others to “come home” to Christ. Let the painting and the lyrics of "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" inspire you to see baptism as the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship.
2. "Christ Giving the Keys to St. Peter" by Pietro Perugino
What to See: This grand fresco captures the moment Jesus entrusts the mission of the Church to St. Peter, symbolized by the handing over of keys. The architectural symmetry and vibrant colors draw the viewer’s attention to the importance of this pivotal moment, emphasizing the authority and responsibility Christ bestows upon His followers.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "Standing on the Promises" The lyrics, “Standing on the promises of Christ my King, through eternal ages let His praises ring,” align with the authority and mission Christ grants to Peter and, by extension, to all believers.
Reflection: Reflect on how Christ has entrusted you with the mission of spreading His message and making disciples. Consider what it means to “stand on His promises” as you fulfill this sacred calling. Let this painting and the song lyrics remind you that discipleship is built on the unwavering foundation of Christ’s promises.
3. "The Calling of St. Matthew" by Caravaggio
What to See: This Baroque masterpiece captures the moment Jesus calls Matthew to follow Him. Jesus’ hand, illuminated in soft light, points directly at Matthew, who sits at a table surrounded by tax collectors. The contrast of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) highlights the transformative moment when an ordinary man is invited to an extraordinary mission.

Connection to Alan Jackson’s Song: Song: "Precious Memories" The lyrics, “Precious memories, how they linger,” reflect the lasting impact of the moment Jesus calls each of us to follow Him, just as He called Matthew.
Reflection: As you reflect on this painting, consider how Jesus calls you personally to follow Him and take part in the Great Commission. Like Matthew, you may feel unworthy or unprepared, but Jesus sees your potential and invites you to step into His plan. Let the lyrics of "Precious Memories" remind you of the pivotal moments in your own faith journey and inspire you to say “yes” to His call.
